Greetings from Key West!
Saltwater Angler has the information for flats fishing in Key West. A mix of lighter winds and gusty rain showers have settled in for the beginning of summer. This is very typical this time of year and makes for a challenge on picking the right days to fish.
The flats continue to bring in good size schools of Bonefish. Many captains are reporting 8-10 lb. fish. The tides are always key to finding the Grey Ghost. Timing the right light of the day with the incoming tides are key. Just about any shrimp or small crab pattern will work. Is all about presentation. Permit are still showing up on the flats in good numbers too.
Crab patterns matching the right bottom color will help you get a shot at these spooky fish. Snapper, Cudas and Jacks are a great alternative to the more difficult fish and can make for a great day on the flats. Look for these fish closer to deep water pockets next to mangrove islands.
As far as Tarpon go, most of the larger migratory fish have moved north. But many of our residential fish in the 25-60 lb. range can still be found tight to mangrove nursery’s holding a lot of bait. Early morning is still your best time to catch these guys when feeding at first light.
Key West Offshore fishing reports show dolphin fish continue to be the main pelagic species of choice this time of year. Looking for good weed lines packed up holding bait is a good place to start. Remember to keep an eye out for feeding birds overhead. They are your best indicator of bait which lead to fish.
Grouper and Mutton Snapper are still being found over deeper ledges off the reef in 50-75 feet of water. Jigging or dropping larger baits down can produce a great fight at these depths.
The Key West reef fishing bite shows Wreck fishing this time of year can still produce Tuna as well as a rod bending day with large Amberjacks too. Yellow tail snapper are still one of the most targeted species outside of the reef. A good amount of chum and patience can lead to a cooler full of these tasty fish. As always wishing you tight lines and fish boatside!
