Key West Fishing Report

We at the Saltwater Angler wish you a warm and sunny welcome from our little slice of Key West paradise. Thank you for your interest in our Key West Fishing Report for Fishing in Key West and the lower keys!

With the winds down to near nothing, Bone fishing has been on FIRE! Getting out early on the incoming tide should bring you many shots at the Grey Ghost! Juvenile Tarpon in the 15-40lb. are also a good option next to many of the deeper mangrove nurseries. Hotter weather has made getting out early or later in the afternoon the best option. With low winds and hot midday, many flats species will head for deeper water until it cools in the evening. Count on few spotted showers all most every afternoon as well and light winds the next week.

Greetings from Key West!

Saltwater Angler has the information for flats fishing in Key West.  The Flats continue to bring in good size schools of Bonefish. Just about any shrimp or small crab pattern will work. Is all about presentation. Permit are still showing up on the flats in good numbers too. Crab patterns matching the right bottom color will help you get a shot at these spooky fish. Snapper, Cudas and Jacks are a great alternative to the more difficult fish and can make for a great day on the flats.

Look for these fish closer to deep water pockets next to mangrove islands. As far as Tarpon go, most of the larger migratory fish have moved north. But many of our residential fish in the 25-60 lb. range can still be found tight to mangrove nursery’s holding a lot of bait. Early morning is still your best time to catch these guys when feeding at first light.

Key West Offshore fishing reports –  With the very light winds, many captains and local fisherman alike have been able to get offshore. The calm of the sea has many fisherman catching a good amount of Dolphin. Few larger bulls and cows have been reported, but mostly it’s been large schools of mid-size dolphin. That size makes for great table fare. Looking for good packed weed lines will put you in the right spot.

Keep in mind, birds diving is a sign of bait which could bring many kinds of pelagic species. As usual reef fishing has been very productive with yellow tail snapper leading the way. A good amount of chum will help you bring them up from the bottom while fishing in 40-60 feet of water.

The Key West reef fishing will be your best bet offshore this week with anyone bringing plenty of chum. Yellow tail snapper have been plentiful if you can get them up off the bottom. Grouper and larger snapper down deep are still good when dropping cut bait, live bait or bouncing big buck tails off the bottom in 40-60 feet of water.
