We at the Saltwater Angler wish you a warm and sunny welcome from our little slice of Key West paradise. Thank you for your interest in our Key West Fishing Report for Fishing in Key West and the lower keys!
Greetings from Key West!
Saltwater Angler has the information for flats fishing in Key West.
Higher winds up to 25mph will be around for the week end but the rest of the week will be calm with warm weather. Getting out on the flats will bring its challenges. High winds make for difficult fly casting. Switching to light spin tackle will be your best chance for a shot at anything.
The Permit fishing has been a little quiet lately, but the Bonefish have been on fire filling the void. For those still heading out onto the flats, keeping your cast low with side cast will help with the winds. Keep an eye out for a tail tip breaking the water as the dig for tasty crabs. as well as any suspicious surface disturbance. This is called nervous water and can been a sign of feeding fish.
Catching the low tide turn will find bones moving in to the flats to feed if the water temp doesn’t drop too low. Both Bonefish and Permit will be coming in to the shallows looking for crabs and shrimp if the sun heats things back up. This time of year we see a lot of smaller schools of Bones in the 4-6lb range.
Just about any smaller crab flies or shrimp flies work very well. With water temperatures dropping, Tarpon could be difficult to get to feed. Cold weather brings difficulty on the flats. If the winds permit you to get out, look for the warmest time of the day with lots of sun. Snapper, Cudas and Jacks are a great alternative to the more difficult fish and can make for a great day on the flats. Look for these fish closer to deep water pockets next to mangrove islands.
Key West Offshore fishing reports:
The higher winds this weekend will make it difficult to get off shore but the week will be really calm. For those in larger boats venturing out, the tuna is still going strong. Look for them to be over deep water structures in 150-300 feet of water. There has been lots of live bait to black out those live wells which will give you the best advantage.
Keep an eye out for feeding birds, they are still the best fish finders out there. The yellow tail fishing has been great just off the reef line in 30-70 feet of water. Cobia and King Mackerel on the gulf side wreaks has been great too with many catching very large cobia.
The Key West reef fishing report:
Reef fishing still continues to be good as more bait shows up. Yellow Tail snapper and grouper will just get better as winter sets in. Although getting out with northern winds will make it difficult. Just remember to boat safe and pay attention to the weather forecast.
