Key West Fishing Report

We at the Saltwater Angler wish you a warm and sunny welcome from our little slice of Key West paradise. Thank you for your interest in our Key West Fishing Report for Fishing in Key West and the lower keys!

Greetings from Key West!

Saltwater Angler has the information for flats fishing in Key West.

The weather will continue to cooperate throughout the week with some scattered thunder showers popping up occasionally. Fly casting should be awesome! It will still be hot and humid so stay hydrated.

As with most days in the summer, getting out early before the flats heat up is your best time. When the flats start to warm up around mid-day, most species will move into deeper water.

Reports of large Bonefish being caught have been the norm the last few weeks. Many Guides have released Bones over 10lbs lately. Just about any respectful shrimp pattern will get their attention just as long as it is presented right. Permit fishing has been very good lately.

A lot of fish has been spotted, but getting good shots with the wind has been a little difficult. Timing your trip with the incoming tide with tan crab patterns will be the fly of choice for Permit. Both small crab and shrimp patterns will work for both Permit and Bonefish. A long with young Tarpon, Jacks and snapper are still options a long the edge flats as well. Anglers will still have plenty of our juvenile fish around in the 20-50 lb. range.

Along with the early morning bite, these tarpons can be targeted late in the afternoon as well. Try matching up the bait fish fly pattern with what the Juvies are feeding on to entice younger Tarpon to roll on your flies. Crab patterns will also work on Tarpon too, especially higher up in the water column.

Key West Offshore fishing reports:

The Dolphin has been on fire! Blue water fly fishing can be so much fun if you can find feeding pelagic species too. Wahoo, Bonita’s and some Tuna are also being landed regularly as well.
The man in the blue suit (Blue Marlin) has been making some appearances too! Just getting a hook up with a Marlin and seeing it blast out of the ocean can make a memory for a life time. The grouper and yellow tail snapper have continued to bite well between 70-90 feet. Wishing all who venture out tight lines and fish boat side!!!

The grouper and yellow tail snapper have continued to bite well between 70-90 feet. Some fish have started to move a little deeper with water temps nearing 90 degrees.

Wishing all who venture out tight lines and fish boat side!!!
