We at the Saltwater Angler wish you a warm and sunny welcome from our little slice of Key West paradise. Thank you for your interest in our Key West Fishing Report for Fishing in Key West and the lower keys!
Greetings from Warm and Sunny Key West!
This time of year, is when we usually see cooler weather here in the lower Keys. It looks to be on the chilly side for most of the week. Temperatures will stay in the 60’s for most of the next 7-10 days.
Cooler water will definitely bring some exciting Cuda action on the flats. Targeting the wolf of the shallows can make for a great day on fly or spin this time of year.
Larger fly patterns mimicking any bait pattern will work. Remember to get the fly moving fast past the Barracuda as they only like live food. A knot-able wire leader is a must. I use 30lb for most of the Cudas. Just remember the really big boys will require 40lb wire and some patience. They can run for quite a while before tiring out.
On warmer days this winter when the sun is up, Permit and Bonefish will venture onto the flats looking for food as well. A few Red Drum and Seatrout will also be an option as the Florida cold water pushes these fish south.
Jacks and Juvenile Tarpon can still be found around shallow mangrove flats as they look for bait that’s schooling under the mangrove branches.
Key West Offshore fishing reports:
With the winds up and down the next few weeks, remember to be safe as you venture offshore.
The reef will be very active this week with an abundance of bait hanging out over the reef.
Yellow tail snapper, along with several other snapper species should be plentiful, especially with a well full of live bait. Offshore the Wahoo and Blackfin tuna remain the best targets. Working west along the bar just outside of the reef will hold a lot of bait and fish.
If live bait is not an option, try working shallow water speed jigs over live bottom or wrecks.
